On this VIBE Staff Spotlight, we’re shining a light on Jason De Mata, VIBE’s Mentorship & Projects Manager. Born and raised in Scarborough, Jason has a BA in Criminology and Social Sciences and Humanities. Jason is also RISE Arts and Community Service’s (also known as RISE Edutainment) Operations Director. He is an avid supporter of local Toronto artists.
VIBE: What is your role at VIBE?
Jason: I am VIBE Arts’ Mentorship & Projects Manager.
VIBE: What led you to the arts?
Jason: I’ve always been a fan of all genres of music, but what really got me into working in the community arts was volunteering my time with RISE when it first started. At the time, I was just about to graduate from University, but felt like I needed to connect with and contribute to my community (Scarborough / Malvern). Working with VIBE Arts is what helped expand my connections with different artists (beyond performance and spoken word artists), and artists from across the entire GTA.
VIBE: What has been one of your favourite moments at VIBE?
Jason: There have been many favorite moments working with VIBE. But in general, getting to work with our artists, and seeing our artists work on display all over the city is such an amazing thing to see.
VIBE: What is something you’re looking forward to in the future at VIBE?
Jason: I always look forward to seeing our artists reach their goals and dreams, and getting the recognition they deserve.
VIBE: What is one of the greatest lessons you have learned thus far?
Jason: Greatest lesson I’ve learned thus far, and I come across everyday, is the importance of communication. Be it answering emails, text messages, phone calls, DM’s, communication is how opportunities are manifested and presented.
VIBE: What changes would you like to see in Toronto’s Art community?
Jason: Changes I would like to see in Toronto’s Art Community are more innovative collaborations between artists, and more appreciation for the artists that we have now in the city regardless if they’re focusing on themselves, or focusing on becoming a commercial/mainstream success. More love all around.
