Happy Black Futures Month!!!
Yet again, we are at a time where Black artists, creatives, and innovators are being highlighted and celebrated. Though I encourage us all to find opportunities for this type of acknowledgment to be practiced year-round, I encourage our city to use this time to advocate for why it is important to do so. As a Black creative and arts administrator, Black Futures Month represents more than just history—it’s about using our power to define our future.
The privilege many of us hold comes with the power to create real change. It’s not enough to simply acknowledge the issues and achievements—it’s also our responsibility to actively engage, educate ourselves, unlearn harmful systems, and create space for safety, equity, and creative expression. Using our influence to amplify Black voices and support Black artists is what we should take away from this month.
For those of you who are new to VIBE (and as a reminder to our long-time supporters), one of the ways we support the Black youth artists in our community is through our NExT program. In its sixth year, we continue to use mentorship and networking to empower Black youth artists across the GTA. The collaborative approach to our mentorship program has created pathways for exposure while working towards breaking down barriers and increasing visibility. As always, Black artists and allies alike, the success of this program relies on working together to create lasting change through funding/donations, access to networking opportunities and resources, as well as community support… so that means mark your calendars for March 20th as we launch Black Futures Exhibition 6.0. The event will showcase the powerful work of 10 Black Creatives, who truly deserve this spotlight and recognition. These artists are shaping the future, and we are inviting you to be part of their journey. With our partner TO Live, we will take over the Meridian Arts Centre to showcase this brilliance. We can’t wait to see you there!
In the meantime, be sure to check our partnership with the Toronto Black Film Festival, this Family Day, where we’re creating safe, educational spaces for all to learn and engage. Inspired by iconic Black abstract artists, participants will explore and embrace their own identities and create colorful mixed-media abstract self-portraits. To stimulate creative energies and the creation of the artworks, VIBE Artist Nyaomi Boogs will share prompts to get young artists thinking about what makes each of them uniquely and exceptionally themselves. VIBE programming will take place Monday, February 17th, 2025 from 12:30-1:30pm at Carlton Cinema, 20 Carlton St., Toronto, ON M5B 2H5.
As a final note, please stay reminded that our individual and collective power can help dismantle the systems that silence the Black community. Be a part of change, use your privilege, and use your power.
To our Black community of artists: You are resilient. Your creativity is powerful. Your art is not just about survival—it is about amplifying your voice and shaping the future. Embrace the power of your story, your experiences, and your art. Your voice is a revolution, and the world needs it. Stay focused on your purpose, and continue using your art to inspire and empower others.
Yours Truly,

Onika
