Talie Shalmon | VIBE Spotlight

This is VIBE Spotlight: a weekly series that celebrates and shines a light on VIBE Arts’ roster of talented artists. Each Monday, our Instagram and website feature a different VIBE Artist and provide a look into their craft. Stay tuned and get to know the diverse talent that makes up our organization and community with #VIBESpotlight.

On this VIBE Spotlight, we’re shining a light on Talie Shalmon, an artist on the VIBE Arts Roster working in fine art, murals and graphic design.

VIBE: What has been one of your greatest accomplishments to date?

Talie: I painted a large, community-engaged mural in Jean Sibelius Square Park in the Annex neighbourhood. I held community consultation sessions with diverse demographics in order to gain feedback for the concept. It was an accomplishment creating a mural that speaks to both the history of the park and its current users.

VIBE: What has been one of your favourite moments while being on the VIBE roster?

Talie: One of my favourite memories while being on the VIBE roster was working at a shelter for women and children. Being able to engage in art making with the people there was a beautiful experience and I was grateful to help create a special moment in their day.

VIBE: Is there anything you are currently working on that you would like to share?

Talie: I’m currently painting a mural at 572 Church St., north of Wellesley, across from the 519. The mural is in partnership with the Church Wellesley Village BIA. It’s almost finished and it’s going to be great!

VIBE: What are some of your future goals?

Talie: I would love to paint more large-scale murals and explore different media for creating public art pieces. I would also like to lead more community-engaged public art projects and continue growing in graphic design and illustration.

VIBE: What is one of the greatest lessons you have learned thus far?

Talie: Don’t let fear stop you from making art. Don’t worry about how things will turn out; enjoy the process and you’ll be surprised by what you can do! Live more, worry less.

VIBE: What changes would you like to see in Toronto’s Art community?

Talie: I would love to see more funding opportunities for artists for things like studio space and support for art creation. Also, more public art opportunities for emerging artists.
