This is VIBE Spotlight: a weekly series that celebrates and shines a light on VIBE Arts’ roster of talented artists. Each Monday, our Instagram and website feature a different VIBE Artist and provide a look into their craft. On this VIBE Spotlight, we’re shining a light on SRE, a rapper/MC, producer, dancer and a new addition to the VIBE Artist roster. He’s also part of NExT, VIBE’s Black Youth Mentorship Program made possible by Canadian Heritage’s CSMARI program.
VIBE: Is there anything you are currently working on that you would like to share?
SRE: I am currently working on an upcoming music video that involves some very talented artists, including myself. I’m also preparing for an art exhibition taking place in March 2021.
VIBE: What has been one of your greatest accomplishments to date?
SRE: One of my greatest accomplishments was beginning the journey of following my passion. Many people have a gift and just sit on it, but – speaking from experience – it takes bravery and courage to put yourself out there. I’m not used to doing that.
VIBE: What has been one of your favourite moments while being on the VIBE roster?
SRE: The never ending support. Onika and Jason are consistently telling people [like me] in the NExT Program that they really want to see us grow as artists. To see and hear people who care about our craft, means more than a lot.
VIBE: What are some of your future goals?
SRE: Some of my future goals are to be a voice for the youth, perform on big stages and develop strong leadership skills to provide opportunities for other artists.
VIBE: What is one of the greatest lessons you have learned thus far?
SRE: Watch your company. It is true what they say: “birds of a feather, flock together”. The people who you surround yourself with can either increase or decrease the value of yourself and your goals.
VIBE: What changes would you like to see in Toronto’s Art community?
SRE: Less discrimination – not just against people of colour – but towards an artist’s practice or art form. People have different ways of expressing who they are, or what they enjoy doing, and I’ve seen people lose motivation from their craft because it wasn’t “the norm”. I would like to see more chances being given out to artists whose idea seems “weird”.
