On this VIBE Spotlight, we’re shining a light on Maneesa Veeravel, an artist working in acrylic, ink and mixed media on VIBE’s emerging artist roster.
VIBE: What has been one of your favourite moments while being on the VIBE roster?
Maneesa: While being on the VIBE roster I got to offer poetry and movement workshops for toddlers with The 519. It was very fulfilling to be working with the 519 after 7 years. This organization supported me and my peers when we were in high school so it meant so much to be reconnected.
VIBE: What has been one of your greatest accomplishments to date?
Maneesa: One of my greatest accomplishments to date was when WAVAW chose one of my ink pieces as a front cover for their Recognition zine. It is an especially proud moment for me because my art commemorating victims of gender based violence ended up being on the cover for a zine that amplified trans and queer writing on sexual harm. This opportunity deepened my relationship with myself and my artwork as a survivor, I also published and performed a couple poems in the zine which was very empowering.
VIBE: Is there anything you are currently working on that you would like to share?
Maneesa: I just published a new webshop and I would love to share it with everyone for prints, stickers, magnets, commissions or collaborations!
VIBE: What is one of the greatest lessons you have learned thus far?
Maneesa: One of the greatest lessons I have learned thus far is that belonging starts within.
VIBE: What are some of your future goals?
Maneesa: My most important goal is to gain a strong sense of stability and regulation through creating. I am looking to consistently play and learn throughout life. I hope to explore new avenues and mediums like digital animation and documentary filmmaking.
VIBE: What changes would you like to see in Toronto’s Art community?
Maneesa: I would love to see more process based opportunities rather than project based initiatives in Toronto’s art community.
