This is VIBE Spotlight: a weekly series that celebrates and shines a light on VIBE Arts’ roster of talented artists. Each Monday, our Instagram and website feature a different VIBE Artist and provide a look into their craft. Stay tuned and get to know the diverse talent that makes up our organization and community with #VIBESpotlight.
On this VIBE Spotlight, we’re shining a light on Jennifer Chin, a photography and mixed media artist. Jennifer is a longstanding artist on the VIBE Established Artist roster and is currently one of the mentors for LaunchPAD, our transitional artist mentorship program made possible by The Canada Council for the Arts.
VIBE: What has been one of your greatest accomplishments to date?
Jennifer: I travelled to China in the Fall of 2018 for an artist’s residency and saw my artwork included in a permanent collection there filled with the work of many artists I admire.
VIBE: What has been one of your favourite moments while being on the VIBE roster?
Jennifer: Having the honour of watching a young artist from one of my programs grow into an amazing artist in their own right, and then become one of my colleagues at VIBE!
VIBE: Is there anything you are currently working on that you would like to share?
Jennifer: I’ve recently opened a new online shop for original works and prints which you can access from my website. Just click on “Shop” in the menu!
VIBE: What are some of your future goals?
Jennifer: To learn more about the world around me, to listen more closely to the voices that I encounter, and to make more art.
VIBE: What is one of the greatest lessons you have learned thus far?
Jennifer: We can’t wait for the perfect time or perfect conditions to make our work so try not to focus on what we “should” have. Instead, think about what we can do with what we have already.
VIBE: What changes would you like to see in Toronto’s Art community?
Jennifer: I’d love to see more support for artist’s studios and exhibition spaces.
